ever seen, in hisu gray uniform and gold braid (he hadi just been exchanged from Fort Warren in\ Boston Harbor), I arrived one evening 1 just after dark at Washington. I put upI at Willards Hotel, prepared for anything^ that was to be done. On arising nextI morning and looking out of the window,o I saw a long line of army wagons passing by in Pennsylvania Avenue, and I said tomyself, Ah, ha ! I am indeed fortunateto have arrived just now, for evidentlythe army is to be on the move. It wasnot so, however, but part of the daily lifeof the capital, which was in the middleof encircling camps, — the great host ofmore than a hundred thousand men mar-shalled there, — and the carrying of sup-plies to and from them caused this con-tinuous procession of wagons. Washing-ton then was a strange sight; nothinglike it had been seen before, nor hasthere since. Knee deep with mud inwinter and covered with dust in summer,with its buildings in an unfinished state. The hotels, of whichWillards was the principal one, werecrowded, besides the ordinary guests andtourists attracted to the place, with amotley array of officers of all ranks andevery branch of the service, whose mud-spattered boots, clanking spurs and swordsresounded over the marble floors of thelobbies and corridors. Of course the great attraction was to see the Army of the Potomac, encampedover the river from which it took itsname. So, armed with passes and lettersof introduction, my friend and I startedoff one beautiful February morning, onhorseback, to visit the camps.
